Winter rose care doesn’t need to be complicated: knowing when to mulch, when to feed and when to reach for the secateurs makes all the difference.

Here’s a practical guide for UK gardens.

Autumn: a light tidy before winter

If tall bush roses are catching the wind, lightly shorten the longest stems in autumn to reduce wind-rock, which can loosen the plant around its roots. Save the main pruning session for late winter.

Check stakes and ties, too, particularly on standard roses. Replace anything loose or broken, making sure ties aren’t rubbing or digging into the stems. If your roses have decorative hips, leave some for winter colour and hungry birds.

When should you mulch roses?

Late autumn or late winter are good opportunities to mulch, provided the soil is moist and workable. Wait if the ground is frozen or waterlogged. Mulch helps protect the soil, conserve moisture and discourage weeds.

Use well-rotted garden compost or well-rotted manure, spreading a layer about 5 cm deep around your roses. Leave approximately 10 cm clear around the stems, rather than piling material against them.

You can also combine mulching with your spring feed in March or April. If you already mulched in autumn, check the covering before adding more; you may only need to top up thin patches.

When should you feed roses?

Save the first fertiliser feed for March or April, as spring growth begins. Roses in borders can receive a rose fertiliser or suitable general-purpose feed, following the product’s instructions. Apply it to the soil before adding fresh mulch.

Avoid nitrogen-rich feeds in autumn: they can encourage soft growth that is vulnerable to winter damage. During winter, concentrate on looking after the plant and soil rather than encouraging fresh shoots.

For repeat-flowering roses, a second feed after the first flush of flowers in midsummer can help support the next display. Container roses need more regular feeding during the growing season.

When should you trim roses back?

The right timing depends on the type of rose.

Rose type

Main pruning time

Hybrid tea and floribunda bush roses

February–March

Repeat-flowering shrub roses

February–March, with pruning suited to the variety

Climbing roses

December–February

Rambling roses and once-flowering shrub roses

Late summer, after flowering

These schedules matter because different roses flower on different growth. Ramblers should usually keep their healthy flowering framework through winter; major renovation is a separate job.

For bush roses, mid-February is often suitable in southern England, while colder areas may need to wait until March. Start by removing dead, diseased, damaged or crossing stems, then shape the remaining growth according to the rose type. Hybrid teas generally take harder pruning than floribundas, while shrub roses often need a lighter approach.

Use clean, sharp secateurs and sturdy gloves. Make cuts just above a healthy outward-facing bud, leaving no more than about 5 mm of stem above it.

Remember roses in pots

Check the compost occasionally through winter. It should neither dry out completely nor remain waterlogged. Container roses rely on you to keep their growing conditions balanced, even when they aren’t flowering.

A few well-timed jobs now can help keep your roses healthy and ready for the warmer months—and give you something lovely to look forward to while the garden rests.
